EXPRESS SYNDICATION WORLD NEWS PHOTO VIA KRT -- (Posted 05/19/04) -- The president of the Carinthian Kilt Association, Thomas Rettl, 40, (in middle with racing bib number 1), gulps down a beer at a special kilt ski race in the Austrian Alps (Spittal) on Sunday. Austria has started a rather bizarre and heated debate with Scotland over which can lay claim to the kilt. Austrian tailors claim they had tartan and kilts a thousand years before the Scots, and have produced a piece of ancient tartan that carbon dating puts 8oo years before the first Scottish kilt was claimed, while the Scots have responded with allegations that the Austrian kilt is a skirt. The ski race was held to cement the Austrians` claim. Code - 291625 www.expresspictures.com Express Syndication 3/7905/7906/7907
